A Stunning Landmark of Bratislava Celebrates its 50th Anniversary

We people love to celebrate anniversaries, and most of us consider a 50th birthday to be a significant milestone in one’s life. Did you know there is a stunning landmark in Bratislava that will turn 50 this year? In this article, we would like to pay tribute to it, as we believe it holds a special place in the hearts of locals. Why? Because it welcomes us from afar every time we return to Bratislava from various parts of Slovakia or the world, signalling that we are almost home!

Modern, even a bit futuristic; it stands out in several dimensions. It is nestled in an enchanting location, showcases unique design, impressive height, combined functionality, technological innovation, and stunning panoramic views. We are speaking about the Kamzik TV Tower.

Its “birth certificate” would indicate that the foundation stone was laid in 1967, but the building was not fully completed until 1975. At 194 meters tall, it was the tallest structure in Bratislava at the time, and it retains that title to this day. Its visibility is enhanced by its majestic rise on Kamzik Hill 514 m above sea level, part of the Little Carpathians mountain range.

During the design and construction of the tower, project designers and architects had to face various challenges, for example the risk of strong gusts of wind – a common phenomenon even today. They demonstrated forward-thinking and innovation, which is reflected also in its unconventional look. Allegedly, the shape of the tower was inspired by a wine bottle, reminding us that we are in the Slovakia’s largest wine region – the Little Carpathian wine region.

Another fascinating aspect of the tower’s construction is that it was built from the top down (yes, that is indeed possible!). Furthermore, the functionality is combined with aesthetics, making the tower serve not only as a transmitter for radio and television stations but also as a viewing platform offering panoramic views of the city.

Food lovers will be pleased to know that they can enjoy a gastronomic experience at the top of the tower, accessible via an elevator (tickets are €6 per person). The restaurant, aptly named Veža (Tower), features a unique rotating system that allows guests to enjoy views of Bratislava and the surrounding landscape from various perspectives. It takes approximately 45 minutes to complete a full 360° rotation.

Hiking enthusiasts will appreciate that several tourist trails lead to the tower. You can take trolleybus no. 44 from the Main Railway Station or Bratislava Castle (direction Koliba) and disembark at the final stop (Koliba). From there, follow the green tourist sign, and after a pleasant half-hour walk, you’ll arrive at a meadow with a playground. Continue along the red tourist sign for about five more minutes uphill, and you’ll be there! On your way back, you can choose another route, such as the red tourist sign, which will take you to Partizanska luka (Partisan Meadow), a children’s paradise with numerous climbing frames and attractions. During school holidays and on weekends, a bus (no. 144) operates to save you the uphill journey. It runs from where the trolleybus ends, and from the final stop (Kamzik), it is only a five-minute walk to the tower. There is also a large parking lot right next to the tower, so if you choose to come by car, you can park nearby.

In summary, if you have extra time to spend in Bratislava, a visit to the Kamzik TV Tower is definitely worthwhile. Whether you want to see something different, escape the hustle and bustle of the city, enjoy the lush greenery of the Little Carpathians, or entertain your children while enjoying a meaningful day outdoors, this place will be an excellent choice for you! 🙂
